Aspen aviation started to get off the ground in the Fifties and is being carried on by Aspen born Nikki Mayer, daughter of Howie Mayer. Howie, besides working on the ski patrol since the 50s, he was known as the red baron bomber of Aspen with his leather helmet, long white scarf, and several home built Starduster Too Bi planes.
Aspen Airways was founded in 1952 by Walter Paepcke, as the flight department of the Aspen Institute of Humanistic Studies. It was created to fly personnel between Aspen and Denver. The airline's first aircraft were surplus Douglas DC-3s.
Aspen Aviation originally formed in the 60s, was founded on the taking care of the locals as well as those that wanted to fly in and out of Aspen.
In addition to the being on the mountain tops skiing, hiking, biking etc. locals residents were able to learn to fly and enjoy the area from the air.
The recently revitalized newly formed Aspen Aviation Inc. is owned and operated by long time local Aspen residents, to provide a plethora of air tour, and jet charter services not only for locals, but for the short term guests as well.
